Confirming what many bikers already believe:
The study, first reported in the Sacramento !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , was completed by U.C. Berkeley over the past year and discovered that lane splitting did not increase the dangers of riding a motorcycle as long as the riders stayed within 10 mph of the flow of traffic.

But of course, no states besides California will ever consider protecting motorcyclists in traffic with laws permitting lane-splitting under 10mph because of the public outcry about the jerks who would speed and kill themselves rear-ending bigger vehicles.

The first thing that needs to happen is better driver training. Too many idiots on the road that don't use their mirrors, text, etc.

Allow lanesplitting? What are we, Vietnam? You would need standardized and widely-publicized legislation to keep the road rage and abuse down. I think everyone appreciates well-disciplined riders, but to legally allow this would be pushing legal-yet-obnoxious behavior to the forefront and in so doing to decrease the reputation of motorcyclists (already low) as a whole.
I've had a close call, sure. Someone at 40mph+ closed in on me at an intersection while I was at a dead stop and he locked everything up in time, thankfully. But then I only whitelined it half a dozen times ever, usually due to 1/4-mile rush hour backups at streetlights, and it wasn't to avoid rear-end collisions.

I think you're actually proving my point here.

So, tell us about your bike Yamahog.

Our Aston Martin tech died yesterday on his ride home on an empty HOV lane. He always drove too fast on those open lanes. He wrecked on his own and died at the scene. I know it's not related to your post but i'm all alone here at work and it reminded me of last night. 31yo with a wife and 2 little kids :'(
On a lighter note, this weekend in Mexico DF, I saw a sweet Yamaha in that classic yellow with that white stripe and black square Yamaha livery. No SR20 tho. It reminded me instantly of Yamahog :] I also know a dude with an AE86 Corolla painted the same way

Sure, but as the article says:
"If you are speeding or have a wide speed differential (with other traffic), that is where the fatalities came about," Chris Cochran of the Office of Traffic Safety told the Bee.
I have absolutely zero issue with people lane splitting in stopped traffic or slow moving traffic - but idiots trying to squeeze between a bus and an SUV doing 75+MPH are just asking for an accident, and I witness this every single day on my commute.
I ALWAYS make space for bikers (if I see them...sometimes they zoom past at 60MPH when traffic is crawling at 5MPH...not much time for anything there), because I'd rather just make way instead of potentially having an accident and witnessing that bloody scene - but we all, especially safe riders, need to crack down on idiots who interpret "lane splitting" too lightly.
If traffic is flowing >45MPH (or whatever we all agree on), no splitting, ever. And no splitting at a speed differential >5MPH.

It would never work. Too many assholes that would wheelie and do other stupid shit between traffic and ruin it for everyone else when they die.

I'm still trying to spot the difference between CBR and R1/R6/ lol. Also, is that the official livery of Yamaha?
